I’m Sarai, a 24 year old TEFL graduate currently working as an ESL teacher for DTLC in Hai Phong, Vietnam. Prior to this I was a Nursing student at University College Cork in Ireland. If you had asked me a couple of years ago what I thought I’d be doing after graduating from University, I probably would have said something along the lines of “find a job”. However, as graduation grew closer, I came to the realisation that I wasn’t ready to work in a standard job, working tedious 12 hour long nursing shifts. I had enjoyed my recent venture travelling around South East Asia and visited the majority of Thailand and also Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam. However, I never got the opportunity to see the South of Vietnam. After catching the so called “travel bug” and my reluctance to work in a standard job, I made the decision to get my TEFL certificate and become a fully qualified ESL teacher.
So on the 6th of January, I said my goodbyes at Dublin airport, belly full of butterflies and excitement, and boarded my flight to what would be the biggest adventure so far.
With a week of intensive training, orientation and partying in Hanoi, it was time to move to Hai Phong where I would live amongst 23 other TEFL teachers. I was so happy to be placed somewhere where I could travel the North while also experiencing what I would like to call “real” Vietnam.
To be continued…
